Infection Prevention is My Highest Priority!
Regardless of the method of encapsulation you choose, (Raw Method or Traditional Chinese Method) both methods begin with two different stages of washes in order to thoroughly clean the placenta prior to processing. The first stage is to simply run warm water over the tissue to remove any obvious blood clots and the amniotic sac. Then once this is completed, I use 1-2 drops of On Guard essential oil blend during the second stage of the wash. This is to ensure protection from any harmful microorganism the placenta may have been in contact with leading up to this point. I am very passionate about the use of essential oils to support one’s body back to a natural state of health. I choose to align myself solely with doTERRA as they are the most tested and most trusted brand of essential oils on the market today! On Guard essential oil is known as the protective blend and I chose this oil for the following benefits:
- Supports healthy immune and respiratory function
- Protects against environmental threats
- Supports the body’s natural antioxidant defenses
- Promotes healthy circulation

Traditional Chinese Method
The Traditional Chinese Medicine method involves steaming the placenta prior to dehydration and encapsulation. In TCM theory, the process of labor and birth leaves a lot of open, empty space, which is considered very yin, or cold. Therefore one major way to promote healing during the postpartum period is to add yang energy via heat. Incorporating steam and warming herbs such as garlic, ginger, and lime into the remedy create a warming, tonifying, and nourishing medicine for the postpartum period. After the steaming process is complete, the umbilical cord and the membranes are removed, and then sliced into very thin strips. It is then placed into the dehydrator and ground into a fine powder. The placenta is finally packed into vegetarian gel capsules for you to enjoy for up to two years if stored properly.
This is highly recommended for families who deliver in the hospital, when there is a known or suspected infection during labor, or when there is meconium present in the amniotic fluid. The initial steaming of the placenta kills off anything foreign the placenta may have been exposed to and helps to thoroughly clean it.
The raw method of encapsulation is common among persons who choose to deliver at home, or at a birth center and believe that the initial steaming process of the Traditional Chinese Medicine method may destroy some beneficial properties of the placenta. In this method, the placenta is thoroughly rinsed as described above. The umbilical cord and the membranes are removed, and then sliced into very thin strips. It is then placed into the dehydrator raw, and dried at the minimum temperature setting possible while still maintaining food safe preservation and handling. The placenta is finally packed into vegetarian gel capsules for you to enjoy for up to two years if stored properly.
